Philosophy, Science, and Religion in England 1640-1700
Philosophy, Science, and Religion in England 1640-1700
By:"Richard W. F. Kroll","Richard Ashcraft"
Published on 1992-01-31 by Cambridge University Press
E-book Library:"History"
This collection of essays looks at the distinctively English intellectual, social and political phenomenon of Latitudinarianism, which emerged during the Civil War and Interregnum and came into its own after the Restoration, becoming a virtual orthodoxy after 1688. Dividing into two parts, it first examines the importance of the Cambridge Platonists, who sought to embrace the newest philosophical and scientific movements within Church of England orthodoxy, and then moves into the later seventeenth century, from the Restoration onwards, culminating in essays on the philosopher John Locke. These contributions establish a firmly interdisciplinary basis for the subject, while collectively gravitating towards the importance of discourse and language as the medium for cultural exchange. The variety of approaches serves to illuminate the cultural indeterminacy of the period, in which inherited models and vocabularies were forced to undergo revisions, coinciding with the formation of many cultural institutions still governing English society.

Computers in Art, Design and Animation

E-book Library:"Art"
The collection of papers that makes up this book arises largely from the joint activities of two specialist groups of the British Computer Society, namely the Displays Group and the Computer Arts Society. Both these groups are now more than 20 years old and during the whole of this time have held regular, separate meetings. In recent years, however, the two groups have held a joint annual meeting at which presentations of mutual interest have been given and it is mainly from the last two of these that the present papers have been drawn. They fall naturally into four classes: visualisation, art, design and animation-although, as in all such cases, the boundaries between the classes are fuzzy and overlap inevitably occurs. Visualisation The graphic potential of computers has been recognised almost since computing was first used, but it is only comparatively recently that their possibilities as devices for the visualisation of complex. and largely ab stract phenomena has begun to be more fully appreciated. Some workers stress the need to be able to model photographic reality in order to assist in this task. They look to better algorithms and more resolution to achieve this end. Others-Alan Mackay for instance-suggest that it is \

Science Experiments Volume 2 (Chemistry, Human Body and General Science)
By:"Sherri MacLean"
Published on 2016-06-16 by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
E-book Library:
This book provides examples of 25 MORE simple experiments (Chemistry, Human Body and Science and General Science) that can be Made at Home and do with your children. It is an introduction to the wealth of material in many other books available in libraries and bookstores. Science Experiments engages young children. It has experiments they can see, touch, manipulate, and modify; situations that allow them to figure out what happens--in short, events and puzzles that they can investigate, which is the very stuff of science. All the experiments have been tested by a group of moms and they work great! But most importantly, kids of all ages are observing, asking questions, learning science, and loving it! And, science experiments are not a hassle anymore, because it's all in the bag!Together, with this book, parents and children can:* Learn how fires are put out; * Learn how to make glue from vinegar and milk; * Learn how much iron is in different juices;* Learn how to make invisible ink;* Learn how to grow crystals in the sun;* Learn how to make your own perfume from common garden plants and spices.Review: Science Experiments Volume 2 has been a great addition to our home school. We find an experiment to match what we are learning. Everything is in the bag, minus perishables, and we're all set to go! All my kids participate and I'm not running all over the house gathering supplies. ~ Pearlita M.It's a bit of work at first, but if you do a little each day and share the work with a group of friends you are done! You've got science experiments for a year (except for a few perishables) ready to go. You can dig deeper by getting books at the library. ~ Bobbie B.This is an inexpensive way to add hands on work to your science curriculum. I love that each person has to focus on supplies for ONE experiment, yet you get 20 for the effort! ~ Kelly P.We LOVED the Science experiments! They are so perfect for my little scientists who can't yet read well; I only need read them the instructions, which are very simple and easy to understand, and they can set off to experiment. They have enjoyed most of them very much, but the ones they REALLY enjoy, they remember how to do and ask to do them on their own over and over. The kits have been great as summer or school break activities, and I've been able to use several to match up to what we are studying, making it so easy for me to prepare a science lesson. For children who are reading and writing well, these would be great independent lessons too! ~ Lisa W.The bags were easy to assemble; and I can't wait for the other experiments to do with my children. ~ Karen G.These science experiments are really cool things to do with your kids during summer break. At least from my experience, I think both my 2 year old and my 8 year old would enjoy this experiment (on different levels of course). ~ Becky S.These are great experiments for young children to be hands on. They can also be adapted to fit the needs of many skill levels. ~ Wendy C.It's worth the time and effort, and a great way to get your kids to learn and be fascinated with the world God created. My daughter loves doing experiments and she can't wait to do more at home. Experiments in a Bag are perfect for our family! ~ Sue R.The experiments that we have tried have been fun and easy to do. My kids are always excited to try a new experiment and I try to let them assemble all the items necessary to do the experiment so they are active participants in the experiment. This is a great fun and quick activity to do with my kids that is also educational. ~ Debbie M.

The Coming Famine
The Coming Famine
By:"Julian Cribb"
Published on 2010-08-10 by Univ of California Press
E-book Library:"Science"
In The Coming Famine, Julian Cribb lays out a vivid picture of impending planetary crisis--a global food shortage that threatens to hit by mid-century--that would dwarf any in our previous experience. Cribb's comprehensive assessment describes a dangerous confluence of shortages--of water, land, energy, technology, and knowledge--combined with the increased demand created by population and economic growth. Writing in brisk, accessible prose, Cribb explains how the food system interacts with the environment and with armed conflict, poverty, and other societal factors. He shows how high food prices and regional shortages are already sending shockwaves into the international community. But, far from outlining a doomsday scenario, The Coming Famine offers a strong and positive call to action, exploring the greatest issue of our age and providing practical suggestions for addressing each of the major challenges it raises.

GIS Applications in Agriculture, Volume Two
GIS Applications in Agriculture, Volume Two
By:"David E. Clay","John F. Shanahan"
Published on 2011-02-16 by CRC Press
E-book Library:"Technology & Engineering"
We are entering a new era in production agronomics. Agricultural scientists the world over call for the development of techniques that simultaneously increase soil carbon storage and reduce agriculture’s energy use. In response, site-specific or precision agriculture has become the focus and direction for the three motivating forces that are changing agriculture today: the expanding capacity of personal computers, the molecular biology revolution, and the recent developments in information technology such as the increasing use of geographical information systems (GIS). Using mathematics, technology, and creativity, GIS Applications in Agriculture, Volume Two: Nutrient Management for Energy Efficiency examines the development of nutrient management practices that help producers improve their profitability and energy efficiency. Throughout the book, chapters demonstrate how complex mathematical and spatial modeling approaches can provide the basis for much of our present and certainly our future management practices. Highlighting recent successes and the nuts and bolts associated with implementing the proposed techniques, the book covers energy efficiency calculations, techniques for overcoming yield-limiting factors, soil information collection and analysis, and remote sensing for improving management decisions. It describes the development of an economically optimum site-specific corn plant population equation based on an experiment containing many field sites, the estimation of soil productivity and energy efficiency using online data sources, and the assessment and implementation of site-specific carbon and water management systems, analyzing energy efficiency of compost and manures. Emphasizing the mathematics that will enable producers to make full use of the technological advances made during the 21st century, GIS Applications in Agriculture, Volume Two holds the key to the successful, sustainable, and efficient production of food to feed the ever increasing world population.

Science & Technology in China: A Roadmap to 2050

Published on 2009-09-30 by Springer Science & Business Media
E-book Library:"Science"
China’s modernization is viewed as a transformative revolution in the human history of modernization. As such, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) decided to give higher priority to the research on the science and technology (S&T) roadmap for priority areas in China’s modernization process. What is the purpose? And why is it? Is it a must? I think those are substantial and signifcant questions to start things forward. Significance of the Research on China’s S&T Roadmap to 2050 We are aware that the National Mid- and Long-term S&T Plan to 2020 has already been formed afer two years’ hard work by a panel of over 2000 experts and scholars brought together from all over China, chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao. Tis clearly shows that China has already had its S&T blueprint to 2020. Ten, why did CAS conduct this research on China’s S&T roadmap to 2050? In the summer of 2007 when CAS was working out its future strategic priorities for S&T development, it realized that some issues, such as energy, must be addressed with a long-term view. As a matter of fact, some strategic researches have been conducted, over the last 15 years, on energy, but mainly on how to best use of coal, how to best exploit both domestic and international oil and gas resources, and how to develop nuclear energy in a discreet way. Renewable energy was, of course, included but only as a supplementary energy.

Headstrong
By:"Rachel Swaby"
Published on 2015-04-07 by Broadway Books
E-book Library:"Science"
Fifty-two inspiring and insightful profiles of history’s brightest female scientists. In 2013, the New York Times published an obituary for Yvonne Brill. It began: “She made a mean beef stroganoff, followed her husband from job to job, and took eight years off from work to raise three children.” It wasn’t until the second paragraph that readers discovered why the Times had devoted several hundred words to her life: Brill was a brilliant rocket scientist who invented a propulsion system to keep communications satellites in orbit, and had recently been awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. Among the questions the obituary—and consequent outcry—prompted were, Who are the role models for today’s female scientists, and where can we find the stories that cast them in their true light? Headstrong delivers a powerful, global, and engaging response. Covering Nobel Prize winners and major innovators, as well as lesser-known but hugely significant scientists who influence our every day, Rachel Swaby’s vibrant profiles span centuries of courageous thinkers and illustrate how each one’s ideas developed, from their first moment of scientific engagement through the research and discovery for which they’re best known. This fascinating tour reveals these 52 women at their best—while encouraging and inspiring a new generation of girls to put on their lab coats. From the Trade Paperback edition.
