Science Teacher Education
Science Teacher Education
By:"Sandra K. Abell"
Published on 2001-11-30 by Springer Science & Business Media
E-book Library:"Education"
The authors of the chapters in this volume have witnessed their share of science education reform efforts in their respective countries, some driven by government policies, some by institutional initiatives, and others by the researchers themselves. In each case, science teacher preparation and the continuing education of science teachers are key elements of reform. Collectively, the writers paint a promising picture of science teacher education internationally. Their stories are of change and progress, of commitment and hope. We present the stories in the spirit of capturing history and moving forward to inform science educators world-wide engaged in science teacher education and reform efforts. This volume can help science educators think globally about issues and values in science education, while providing ideas for taking local action.

Thinking about Animals in the Age of the Anthropocene
Thinking about Animals in the Age of the Anthropocene
By:"Morten Tønnessen","Kristin Armstrong Oma","Silver Rattasepp"
Published on 2016-04-13 by Rowman & Littlefield
E-book Library:"Literary Criticism"
The term “Anthropocene”, the era of mankind, is increasingly being used as a scientific designation for the current geological epoch. This is because the human species now dominates ecosystems worldwide, and affects nature in a way that rivals natural forces in magnitude and scale. Thinking about Animals in the Age of the Anthropocene presents a dozen chapters that address the role and place of animals in this epoch characterized by anthropogenic (human-made) environmental change. While some chapters describe our impact on the living conditions of animals, others question conventional ideas about human exceptionalism, and stress the complex cognitive and other abilities of animals. The Anthropocene idea forces us to rethink our relation to nature and to animals, and to critically reflect on our own role and place in the world, as a species. Nature is not what it was. Nor are the lives of animals as they used to be before mankind´s rise to global ecological prominence. Can we eventually learn to live with animals, rather than causing extinction and ecological mayhem?

Parenting for Peace
Parenting for Peace
By:"Marcy Axness"
Published on 2012-01 by Sentient Publications
E-book Library:"Family & Relationships"
If we really want to change the world, let us raise a generation hardwired for peace and innovation from the very beginning. A child whose brain develops its capacity for self-regulation, self-reflection, trust, and empathy is a joy to parent. As an adult, this individual will have the heart to embrace and exemplify peace, the mind to innovate solutions to social and ecological challenges, and the will to enact them. Such a person is never a genetically predetermined given, but the result of dynamic interactions between genetics and environment, beginning before he or she is even born. Foundations for this level of health begin forming during the prenatal period, and some aspects of optimal development are influenced as early as conception. In the midst of our global human, economic and environmental crises, we have overlooked a profound means of cultivating a sustainable, peaceful future: the choices and attitudes with which we bring our children to life and shepherd them into adulthood. With compassion, good humour and engaging examples, this book points out fundamental missteps we have made through the ages, and explains why they're counter-productive. It gives straightforward guidelines using a unique 7-step/7-principle matrix for parents to foster their children's development in a vibrantly growth-oriented fashion, rather than a protection-oriented fashion. This is an essential guide for raising a generation of peacemakers.

Science and Religion: A Very Short Introduction
Science and Religion: A Very Short Introduction
By:"Thomas Dixon"
Published on 2008-07-24 by OUP Oxford
E-book Library:"Religion"
The debate between science and religion is never out of the news: emotions run high, fuelled by polemical bestsellers like The God Delusion and, at the other end of the spectrum, high-profile campaigns to teach 'Intelligent Design' in schools. Yet there is much more to the debate than the clash of these extremes. As Thomas Dixon shows in this balanced and thought-provoking introduction, many have seen harmony rather than conflict between faith and science. He explores not only the key philosophical questions that underlie the debate, but also the social, political, and ethical contexts that have made 'science and religion' such a fraught and interesting topic in the modern world, offering perspectives from non-Christian religions and examples from across the physical, biological, and social sciences.. Along the way, he examines landmark historical episodes such as the trial of Galileo by the Inquisition in 1633, and the famous debate between 'Darwin's bulldog' Thomas Huxley and Bishop Wilberforce in Oxford in 1860. The Scopes 'Monkey Trial' in Tennessee in 1925 and the Dover Area School Board case of 2005 are explained with reference to the interaction between religion, law, and education in modern America. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

The Reef Aquarium Volume Three
The Reef Aquarium Volume Three
By:"J. Charles Delbeek","Julian Sprung"
Published on 2005 by Two Little Fishies Incorporated
E-book Library:"Science"
Reefkeeping science involves the interplay of biology, chemistry, and physics. However, a reef aquarium is not simply a product of scientific knowledge. The application of engineering and its product technology, makes it possible to duplicate the specific biological, chemical, and physical requirements of a coral reef in a relatively small volume of water. This third volume in The Reef Aquarium series, provides the most thorough description of the science behind the creation of a captive reef, and critically reviews and explains the different philosophical approaches to reef aquarium design. It also describes and illustrates the existing as well as emerging technology for building reef aquariums, to help guide the selection of equipment, its proper use, and installation.
